Testing Subgame Perfection Apart From Fairness in Ultimatum Games∗

چکیده
We present an experiment that attempts to separate the two commonplace explanations for behavior in ultimatum games–subjects’ concern for fairness versus the failure of subgame perfection as an equilibrium refinement. We employ a tournament structure of the bargaining interaction to eliminate the potential for fairness to influence behavior. Comparing the results of the tournament game with two control treatments affords us a clean test of subgame perfection as well as a measure fairness-induced play. We find after 10 iterations of play that about half of all non-subgame-perfect demands are due to fairness, and the rest to imperfect learning. However, as suggested by models of learning, we also confirm that the ultimatum game presents an especially difficult environment for learning subgame perfection. ∗We are grateful to Larry Samuelson, Gary Bolton and Richard Zeckhauser helpful comments. Information in Ultimatum Games: An Experimental Study
This study reports on an experiment using variations of the ultimatum game. The experiment controls the amount and type of information known to the responder in the game. In two treatments, she knows both the absolute (money) and relative (fairness) payoffs from an offer. In the other two, she knows either only the absolute or only the relative payoffs. The predictions of four models for these ...
متن کاملSubgame perfection in ultimatum bargaining trees
In typical experiments on ultimatum bargaining, the game is described verbally and the majority of subjects deviate from subgame-perfect behavior. Proposers typically offer significantly more than the minimum possible and responders reject “unfair” offers. In this work, we show that when the ultimatum bargaining game is presented as an abstract game tree, the vast majority of behavior is consis...
متن کاملDowealth Differences Affect Fairness Considerations?
The influence of relative wealth on fairness considerations is analyzed in a series of ultimatum game experiments in which proposers and receivers are given large and widely unequal initial endowments. Subjects initially demonstrate a concern for fairness. With time however, the dynamics of behavior become at odds with both subgame perfection and fairness. Evidence of learning is detected for b...
متن کاملHomo Æqualis: A Cross-Society Experimental Analysis of Three Bargaining Games
Abstract. Data from three bargaining games—the Dictator Game, the Ultimatum Game, and the Third-Party Punishment Game—played in 15 societies are presented. The societies range from US undergraduates to Amazonian, Arctic, and African hunter-gatherers. Behaviour within the games varies markedly across societies. The paper investigates whether this behavioural diversity can be explained solely by ...
متن کاملSocial Preference, Incomplete Information, and the Evolution of Ultimatum Game in the Small World Networks: An Agent-Based Approach
Certain social preference models have been proposed to explain fairness behavior in experimental games. Existing bodies of research on evolutionary games, however, explain the evolution of fairness merely through the self-interest agents. This paper attempts to analyze the ultimatum game's evolution on complex networks when a number of agents display social preference. Agents' social preference...
